a to try to do st. esprime il tentativo, lo sforzo di fare qualcosa: I'll try to fix it, proverò ad aggiustarlo, cercherò di aggiustarlo. In alcuni casi è possibile usare la forma to try and: We should try and help them, dovremmo cercare di aiutarli. La costruzione to try and è considerata più informale ed è usata unicamente quando to try si trova nella sua forma base, non declinata, quindi solo all'imperativo e all'infinito o dopo un verbo modale; perciò una frase come Try and come!, prova a venire! è corretta, mentre We tried and helped her e He is trying and studying harder non sono frasi accettabili.
b to try doing st. indica il tentativo di fare qualcosa per vedere se è utile o efficace, o se funziona: Try turning it this way, prova a girarlo da questa parte; Next time why don't you try asking him more politely?, la prossima volta perché non provi a chiederglielo in modo più cortese?; Try putting some fresh basil in the sauce, it's delicious!, prova a mettere un po' di basilico fresco nel sugo; è squisito!
